AxCrypt 1.6.2

by svante@axantum.com 2006-01-01 15:11

Finally got the maintenance release together for AxCrypt, now at version 1.6.2. This should hopefully clear the air a bit, and let me focus on AxCrypt2Go aka the "next version" possibly aka AxCrypt 2.0. It does fix some things some users have voiced loud opinions about, so don't say that I don't listen! Even when, like in this case, it's just for show. Anyway it's easier to fix than to teach everyone about Virtual Memory and how it works, so AxCrypt will now trim it's memory so it'll appear to have a very small footprint in memory, about 600K when idle. It also does not run any background threads to collect entropy, it just uses the Microsoft Crypto API which by now pretty much has proven itself.

Status of AxCrypt2Go is that after many false starts and remakes, it's actually starting to take form. The core functionality is done, although not fully tested, especially the multi-threaded parts. There are some definite candidates for race conditions in there, so I'm planning a clean up of that before Alpha release.
